Meeting #1 Fall'09

Quote of the Day:

Media, by altering the environment, evoke in us unique ratios of sense perceptions. The extension of any one sense alters the way we think and act— the way we perceive the world.

When

these

ratios

change,

MEN CHANGE.

–Mcluhan/Fiore

Ice breaker:

Name, age, class year and major (if you have one)

· What does media mean to you?

Agenda

1. Constitution- We will go over details of the constitution and positions available.

2. Budgeting/fundraising- One dollar per student initiative. Where will our money go?

3. Event Schedule and Topics to cover for the Fall semester

4. Choosing a Theme for the first issue

New News

Our new Plan for the Bubble Magazine:

We decided to go with a cheaper and easier format for The Bubble Magazine. We will be using a Typepad interface. Typepad is a blog creator format. We hope to make The Bubble Magazine a Site that hosts multiple typepad blogs. .

Why a blog?
The Purpose of this Magazine is to spark dialogue, strengthen community and bring educational conversations outside of the classroom and into the public domain.
Blogs are simple multimedia platforms that allow for ongoing communication and dialogue with people in your community.

With the blogs we can use, Video, Podcasts and MP3's! Content can be published simply and easily at anytime without worry of page space and deadlines.

Why Typepad?
Typepad allows us to build a site and add multiple blogs to it. Each blog can be it's own subject. And It's Cheap! The cost will be about $15.00 per month averaging out to about a little less that $200.00 for twelve months!

Budget:
We are adjusting our 1 Dollar per student mission to fit a new need. Instead of using the money for site development we will use it for campus wide programs and our once a year print issue.

More details on this to come!

Auditions for The Bubble Videos!

Hello There Bubblers!

As an online form of media one of our advantages over print is that we get to play around with Audio and Video! The Bubble Magazine is looking for fresh new talent for our four monthly 5-minute video spots!

If you love to be in front of the camera, have awesome stage presence and always wanted to have your own show, then this just might be the gig for you. We have four “video themes” but it is up to you all to decide on the angle of your show.

Chosen applicants will win a monthly video-show-spot, an expose interview in the October issue and secret surprise!

The themes are:

· News/Politics (International/national)- We are looking for a professional, anchor style production, add your own flair, be as creative as possible but remember you’re news anchors (and I’m not talking Ron Burgundy).

· Pop/consumer culture/College life- Sharp, witty, funny, youthful, sarcastic (but not crass), this video will be a commentary on social/consumer/pop culture issues. You can take this in many ways from talk show style like Chelsea Lately, Vh1 Best week ever, or video blogger style like Sarah Haskins (Google them for examples) Again be creative and have fun!

· Sports-Give Wheaton a glimpse of Sports @ Wheaton and beyond. Video clips, over views, montage, mini-interviews, on the field coverage. You’re a sports anchor but this is your Video show so make it exciting, fun and entertaining.

· Arts and Style - This spot will be creative genius. Interviews from artists. Showcases of new exhibits, art @ Wheaton and in the media and hopefully some on-the field footage! And premiers of Wheaton animations, clips of student produced movies and theater.

In these hard times...

It seems that Facebook is doing quite well. Check out this article we found at the Financial Times.

Welcome to

Whats Poppin @ The Bubble Magazine! This blog is dedicated to keeping you, our readers and fans, up-to-date and involved with the entire behind the scenes process of publishing The Bubble Magazine,Wheaton'sonly online student run publication.

Through this blog we plan to document every baby step we take toward the magazines launch this fall!

Why a blog?

Blogs are a useful and fun way to compile information from various sectors of the web. They can be a platform to generate ideas from a range of sources, opinions and people in order to create the best most informative resource to suit your needs.

In our case it is a space to share our nebulous conceptual thoughts but also to contribute yourown ideas and opinions, and even get involved! Besides, we can always use a helping hand. We hope that by doing this we will be making The Bubble Magazine as user friendly and student oriented as possible.

Week-by-Week

We plan to post a weekly question or topic of discussion with the hope that our followers will contribute their ideas and thoughts on topics such as:

  • Content
  • Web Formatting
  • Event Ideas
  • Fundraising prospects
  • Monthly Issue Focus

We will also keep you informed on:

  • Partnerships and supporters
  • The Bubble Budget/Funds
  • Major website decisions
  • Administration and Professor Support

Weblinks, videos and web 2.0 content that can be useful or interesting to check out will also be added frequently.

How else can you help?

Like most publications, The Bubble takes some serious work and commitment. While we are trying to keep the Magazine’s production as low in cost as possible, the start-up is going to take a bit of revenue— which is why we plan to also use this blog as a fundraising mechanism to help us reach our goals! In the meantime we will be using a free web server to host the Magazine until we have the funds to make The Bubble bigger and better.

***If every Student at Wheaton donated $1.00 we would have generated $1,550!This would cover the cost of server space and web design for at least four years! So please hit that Pay Pal Button and donate a buck!***

Thanks for checking out our brand new blog and come back soon for more updates, conversations feedback and fun!!
